Neighborhood Spotlight: Park View

Diego Sito

Realtor, Diego Sito, shares his thoughts on living in the Park View Neighborhood of DC:

After living here for the last two years, I’ll let you in on a little secret. Park View is the most underrated neighborhood in the district. Packed with history and overlooking the Howard Reservoir, this neighborhood boasts an unparalleled walkability to some of the city's best entertainment while maintaining its quiet and quaint atmosphere.

First developed in the 1960s, Park View was named for its location overlooking the Old Soldiers Home & Golf Course. Park View is technically defined by these boundaries: The Old Soldiers Home and MedStar Hospital to the East, Georgia Avenue to the North, Harvard St to the South, and Sherman Ave to the West. However, residents often frequent Petworth, Columbia Heights, Shaw, and 14th St Corridor on foot. (.5 miles from Columbia Heights & Petworth) (1 mile from Shaw and 1.5 miles from AdMo, & 14th St). For those of you who take the metro, there is nowhere in the neighborhood that is more than a 15-minute walk from the Georgia Ave-Petworth Station and the Columbia Heights station. Georgia Ave is also a main Metrobus corridor.

Federal-style rowhomes with spacious front porches dominate the landscape. Those that have been converted into condos are often only 3 units and incorporate the original facade. With new development on the horizon, this neighborhood is perfectly positioned to see an increase in demand as retail opportunities are introduced via the redevelopment of 80 acres of the Old Soldiers Home.

The proposed plan, which the city hopes to approve later this year, is massive: nearly 4.9 million square feet of development, including more than 3,100 residential units, 1 million square feet of office, and a mix of new retail, hotels, and open space.

A day here is never a day without countless activities at your fingertips. Take a walk through the community garden, Wangari Gardens, play in a sports league at one of the numerous local parks and walk to a Howard University Game. Once you have worked up an appetite, you can walk over to some of the city's most acclaimed restaurants and bars on Georgia Ave ie. Call Your Mothers, Sonny’s Pizza, St Vincent Wine Bar, Heat Da Spot & Looking Glass Lounge, and on 11th St, which is quickly becoming one of the best dining strips in the city,  via acclaimed restaurants like The Coupe, Makan, Queens English, El Chucho, etc. the list truly goes on and on…and on (send us an email for more recommendations ).

During the stress of the pandemic, I have taken so much comfort in knowing that I can leave my front door and walk almost anywhere in this half of the district. I love Park View but don’t take my word for it. Send me a DM, and we’ll grab one of DC’s best bagels, and you can see for yourself!
